Hi. New-bee to beekeeping. Concerned about the cold temperatures. Live in Madison County. Do we need to put any kind of protection on the pinewood hives to protect the bees from the cold? Our hives are on the roof of an 8x40 container where they thrived all summer. It is very breezy up there.

By the 1st of October you should have closed your entrances down to the smallest size. After that the bees are able to self regulate, even in freezing temperatures. You don't want/need to add anything that would confused their natural ability to self -regulate. If you go out early in the morning, you might see some it's some bees that look like they're dead on the landing board, but in fact they're cold and will eventually wake up.
